Emergency Management (EMX)

This course introduces students to the principles and practices of emergency management, focusing on preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation of natural and human-made disasters. Students will gain foundational knowledge of emergency management systems, explore case studies, and develop practical skills to address real-world challenges in the field.

This course explores the intersection of law, policy, and emergency management. Students will examine the legal frameworks, policies, and governance structures that guide emergency preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation efforts. The course will cover topics such as federal and state emergency laws, liability issues, human rights concerns, disaster response frameworks, and ethical considerations in emergency management. Through case studies and real-world examples, students will gain an understanding of how laws and policies shape emergency management practices.

This foundational course introduces students to the principles and practices of emergency management planning. It covers principles, key frameworks, and essential skills needed to address various planning needs. Students will learn about risk assessment, resource coordination, and stakeholder engagement to develop effective emergency management plans.

Building on the foundational knowledge from EMX 330, this advanced course takes a deeper examination of the complexities of emergency management planning. Students will learn to address multi-hazard scenarios, integrate technology and data analytics, and incorporate advanced strategies for all phases of a disaster.

This course provides an overview of the principles, and the evolving field of homeland security. Students will explore the historical context, key concepts, and contemporary challenges facing the United States in protecting its citizens and critical infrastructure from terrorism/extremism, natural disasters, and other threats.
