Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)

This course introduces the medical laboratory science student to principles, techniques, and vocabulary related to the clinical laboratory. Laboratory and patient safety, medical terminology, laboratory mathematics, and specimen collection with emphasis on phlebotomy are covered.

Study the biology of clinically significant bacteria. Emphasizes pathophysiology and diagnostic procedures and tests used for their detection and identification. Topics of learning include, but not limited to, epidemiology, signs and symptoms of disease, mechanisms of infection and treatment. Contemporary laboratory methodologies used to examine, process and analyze clinical specimens are also discussed.

Continuation of Clinical Microbiology I. Study the biology of clinically significant bacteria such as, but not limited to, obligate anaerobes, partially acid fast bacilli and mycobacteria. Parasitology, mycology and virology will also be studied. Emphasizes pathophysiology and diagnostic procedures and tests used for their detection and identification. Topics of learning include, but not limited to, epidemiology, signs and symptoms of disease, mechanisms of infection and treatment. Contemporary laboratory methodologies used to examine, process and analyze clinical specimens are also discussed.

Study of the significance of chemical analytes indicative of human health and disease. Topics of learning include, but not limited to, analytical methodologies, operating principles, and utilization of biochemical laboratory instrumentation, equipment and analyzers for analyte determinations; clinical and research. Chemical analytes that will be discussed throughout the duration of this course include, but not limited to, carbohydrates, electrolytes, proteins, enzymes, non-protein nitrogen compounds, lipids and blood gases. Quality control and preventative maintenance methods are also discussed.

Continuation of Clinical Chemistry I. Topics of learning include, but not limited to, analytical methodologies, operating principles, and utilization of biochemical laboratory instrumentation, equipment and analyzers for analyte determinations; clinical and research.Emphasis on the study of organ function, endocrinology, heme derivatives, nutrition assessment, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring, tumor markers, specialized care and special chemistry and problem solving in the clinical chemistry laboratory.

This course introduces the hematopoietic system through the study of the origin, development, and function of red blood cells, including the normal physiology and metabolism of red cells. In addition, normal and abnormal red and white blood cell morphology, and associated pathological findings will be examined. Basic techniques employed in clinical hematology laboratories are taught and testing is performed on human blood samples. Lecture and laboratory.

This course continues the study of the hematopoietic system through examination of disorders of white blood cells. Hemostasis, the platelet, and related disorders are discussed. Basic techniques employed in clinical hematology laboratories are taught and testing is performed on human blood samples. Lecture and laboratory.

This seminar course is designed to allow students to evaluate their readiness to begin practicing as a medical laboratory scientist. Students explore personal and professional development related to transitioning into the medical laboratory science field. Topics include certification preparedness (all disciplines of laboratory medicine). Topics are covered through lectures, active learning activities, case studies, review questions and examinations.

This course provides the medical laboratory science student with foundational knowledge in urinalysis and body fluids. Basic anatomy and physiology of the urinary tract are reviewed with emphasis on urine formation. Physical examination, chemical analysis, and microscopic examination of urine and various body fluids are discussed. Renal, extrarenal, and other conditions and diseases as they relate to urinalysis and body fluid findings are examined.

Graduate practical internships in clinical and/or research laboratories. Students participate in all phases of laboratory functions common to contemporary clinical laboratory practice including, but not limited to, microbiology (routine and specialized procedures in bacteriology, mycology, parasitology, virology and serology), chemistry (routine and specialized procedures in general chemistry, toxicology, therapeutic drug monitoring and chemical immunoassay), hematology (routine and specialized procedures in clinical hematology, coagulation and other biologic fluids), immunohematology (routine and specialized procedures in blood banking and transfusion medicine) and immunopathology (immunodiagnostics, serology). Students also participate in relevant continuing education activities and engage in other professionally related activities. Prerequisite: Completion of pre-practicum medical laboratory science and core curriculum coursework

Self-administered review materials followed by a pass/fail comprehensive exam in the discipline-specific body of knowledge and scope of practice necessary to prepare for national certification examination(s).
